Wolfe skewer toxic masculinity, the white male literary canon, rape culture, patriarchy, and white male rage - all wrapped up with a bow & If you're intrigued to hear that Riki Lindhome of Garfunkel and Oates has refashioned "Up on the Housetop" into a jaw-dropping rape-culture callout, this is the movie for you. Who does this sound appealing to? I imagine it could work if it's a great film but it appears to be a pretty poor film. All this threatens to veer towards the heavy-handed, but there's enough wit to make it work. There's a degree of visual style, too. it is genuinely barbed as gender satire, and it cleverly pre-empts obvious outrage. even the positive reviews point to the film being heavy handed.

Because of this, there are stark differences between black Americas celebration of the season and the rest of the countrys. We decided to walk you through some of these cultural disparities just in case you couldnt recognize the holiday being supported on the black side of town. The Christmas Season When it comes to Black Christmas, the holiday begins much later than the traditional Caucasian season. The white Christmas season begins immediately after the Dallas Cowboys lose on Thanksgiving Day. They barely give their turkeys time to digest before they wander to the mall to get their asses kicked in the Black Friday mixed martial arts tournament to buy discounted gifts for their loved ones. This is not to say that black people dont wade into the Black Friday morass, because as a culture, we have been taught to value a good sale. But the reason black people always win the Walmart kickboxing matches over dirt-cheap flat-screen televisions is partly that—unlike our unseasoned shopping counterparts—we arent purchasing those presents for our loved ones. Thats our   47-inch plasma! Yall dont have enough invested in the fight! In fact, according to a 2017 Gallup Poll that was never conducted, 22 percent of all Christmas traffic is black people taking advantage of holiday sales for their own benefit. Black Christmas shoppers purchase most of their gifts during a little-known holiday called “Christmas-Bonus Paycheck Day. ” This is when we start decking the halls with boughs of Holly, because this is when the true Christmas season begins. They wont be disappointed because they know they will receive the D batteries and bicycle tires sometime between Christmas Day and April 15. Santa Claus Santa Claus is one of the hallmarks of white Christmas. White kids believe in old St. Nick until they are 22 or 23 years old. Black children, on the other hand, have about 16-17 minutes of wondrous folly before they realize that the idea of a benevolent white man bringing joy to their lives is highly questionable. This is because white people are much better at accepting bullshit than their Negro counterparts. As soon as a black kid can talk, he or she has too many questions that cant be answered by the Santa fairy tale, such as: How did Santa get in our third-story apartment when we dont have a chimney, Mommy? This is why black parents always end the charade and let their children know that, like Chicagos “ gang thugs, ” All Lives Matter and trickle-down economics, Santa is a figment of the white imagination. Music There are no Black Christmas carols. We have Christmas songs. Many of them are simply remixes that put some funk in songs that white people already made because we dont understand the white carols anyway. Seventy-three percent of black children spent most of their childhoods believing that the seminal song of white Christmas was entitled “Jing-o Bells. ” We have no idea who “Hawk the Harold” is, how he became an angel, or why hes only singing glory to one of Jay-Z and Beyoncés twins. (Shouldnt it be “glory to the newborn king and queen? ”. Our Christmas carols often have nothing to do with Jesus. Most of them are about the need for sex and companionship on this glorious day. When all I want for Christmas is you, we soon realize that Christmas just aint Christmas without the one you love. After all, what do the lonely do at Christmas? These are the pertinent questions. These songs, however, are just warnings of what can happen if you forget to shake a hand and make a friend. In fact, “Silent Night” by the Temptations, the greatest Christmas song ever made, is basically a remixed version of a white Christmas carol. As the story goes, one night, the Temptations went into the studio with nothing but a bottle of Crown Royal and a carton of Benson & Hedges and said, “Fuck the lyrics. ” What came out was an improvised, nonlinear sermon, soul song, and outright classic about Jesus, Santa Claus and freedom. Food As noted in the Caucasians Guide to Black Thanksgiving, all holiday dinners are just lesser versions of black cookouts. The Christmas meal is basically the identical menu from Black Thanksgiving with ham replacing the turkey. No one knows where they came from or how they got into your house. Its not like you were thinking all year: “I cant wait for Christmas so I can chip a tooth on a piece of baked flour sprinkled with granulated sugar! ” Yet they are always there. And you always eat them. But the worst part of it all is that sometime in April, you will see the same tin, and even though you werent craving anything sweet, youll open up that tin to eat one again. But it will be filled with sewing needles and thread. I think Santa Claus is leaving this shit behind as a prank. The Story of Black Christmas Finally, you should know that the Christmas story is different in black households. Instead of a beautiful yarn about a blond savior, the following is a summary of what we are celebrating: A few thousand years ago, Mary and Josephs camel broke down in Bethlehem. I'm sure this has been discussed many times before, but I just saw Black Christmas (1974) for the first time last night and I was really impressed. It was much more interesting and thoughtful than I thought it was going to be. I've heard it called the "first slasher film" but that doesn't really do it justice, because it's actually a well-made movie with interesting characters and a more thoughtful script than most films of that genre. For example, even though it's often classified as a slasher, and was an overt inspiration for Halloween, it doesn't fall into the same tired tropes. The characters are not 2D cutouts, and "the final girl" not only has sex, she is also intending on having an abortion, and survives. Most other slasher films would have killed her off in favor of a more "pure" example of the final girl trope. In another departure from the genre norms, the police are actually competent and doing their jobs, not the bumbling idiots that most of these movies rely on to setup a successful serial killer. I found the phone calls to be extremely creepy, and the ambiguous ending left me wondering what was really going on. You can watch it for free on Tubi, just FYI.

Next week, Childs Play will get the same treatment and its now been announced that Blumhouse Productions have answered the call to reimagine of the 1974 cult-classic Black Christmas. Four years before Halloween redefined the genre with the ultimate slasher flick, Bob Clarks Black Christmas did it first, as it told the story of a group of sorority girls who are stalked and then murdered by a mysterious killer one by one during the holidays. The film starred It s Olivia Hussey and Superman s Lois Lane, Margot Kidder. The new Black Christmas will be directed by Sophia Takal, who previously helmed the 2016 thriller Always Shine and a segment of Hulus Into the Dark series titled New Year, New You. Takal co-wrote the script with April Wolfe, per Slash Film. The slasher flick will star Green Room s Imogen Poots and a slew of young television talent: Aleyse Shannon from CWs Charmed, Brittany OGrady from CWs The Messengers, Lily Donoghue and Caleb Eberhardt. Takal will mark the first female director to helm a feature by Blumhouse Productions. The remake will center on sorority girls attending Hawthorne College as an unknown killer hunt them down. The holiday release does give the movie heavy competition as it opens against the Jumanji sequel, one week before Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker. The film has a 9 million budget and grossed just 21 million at the box office. Hopefully this time without so many logic holes. Edit: Am I wrong? Here's a few form the top of my head. The nails in the staircase would have to be hammered from bottom up for it to pierce a foot. WHO DOES THAT? If 1 mattress is enough to muffle a screaming infant. then why not have them all around the house, it wouldn't be that hard to scavenge a local furniture store or better yet live around the waterfall. Or if not, then record the waterfall saunds and use the recording on a loop through speakers to mask everything. But speaking of the waterfall, since it is noisy it should be crawling with aliens and not be the peaceful place it is showed. Also if the aliens have been a problem for a longer time then I'd assume that there had to be experiments by a military on how they react to different sounds frequencies, pitches and so on. But then the plot doesn't make sense. Capturing one shouldn't be that difficult either since all you'd need is thick enough box with a speaker. We know that there was manufacturing going on after they appeared because of the printed newspapers. Since they walk barefoot in temperate climate how did they deal with colds all those winters? Sneezing is not something you can control. How did they power all this equipment? Did they have a generator? Generator is noisy. Did they have connection to grid? Someone has to maintain it. Go there. It is strongly implied that they grow corn. How do they harvest it? Machines make noise and with the scale of the plantation working by hand is not practical. That's just a few I remember (I watched the movie quite a while ago) but I'm sure there's a lot more.
